Infertility and chiropractic

You may be thinking what can chiropractic possibly have to contribute in the field of fertility. Rightfully so, if you have never been to a chiropractor with a holistic approach the answer may elude you.

During a new patient interview all doctors are taught to review the possible systems of involvement. Which is why if you seek a doctors advice for the resolution of low back pain, your doctor may ask you if you have had any changes in bowl or bladder movements, reproductive changes, or pain in your legs.

The reason is purely anatomical. The nerves which emerge from the spine to control your back muscles and transmit the signal of back pain, are intimately related to the nerves which control the organs of digestion, reproduction, and the movement of your legs.

In chiropractic, stories of non pain related symptom relief often occur and serve as a testimony towards the holistic approach of chiropractic. Fortunately our profession is moving towards scientific documentation of such experiences.

Some patients call them miracles, as in “I came in for my back pain, and now I’m pregnant.” Miracles can occur when science fails to provide an explanation. Although our science is just beginning to understand how such relationships exists, we are entering a very special period when data and research are catching up to the unexplained medical marvels of our lives.

In this recent study published in the premier chiropractic research journal (JVSR), a 23 year old women sought chiropractic care for her low back pain and numbness in her legs and feet. The women also had a history of infertility and amenorrhea, which is basically the absence of  menstrual bleeding.

The women not only achieved success in resolving her back pain and leg numbness, she also achieved her first period in years, and later discovered that she was four and a half months pregnant!

How did it happen? Was it a miracle? Can it work for you?

The obvious questions one would ask after digesting such information, and the answers are this…

1. Chiropractors use their hands to relieve areas of spinal dysfunction. When the function is restored to the spine, the nerve signals that travel from the brain to body and body to brain are restored as well. This includes not only the signal that transmits pain, but also the signal that carries information for reproduction.

2. Nope, not a miracle, just science.

3. Unless you have a genetic disposition towards infertility (less than 5% of cases),
and if the conditions is spinal related then YES. But there is only one way to find
out!
